Haines
is located at the northern end of America's longest fjord, the Lynn
Canal. The city has a population of about 1,300 year round residents.
The scenic backdrop to Haines is quite remarkable, and the region boasts
some 20 million acres of protected wilderness. Less than 25 miles away
is one of North America's great natural features, Glacier Bay National
Park. Canada's impressive Kluane National Park and Tatshenshini-Alsek
Provincial Park are also on the doorstep. All are easily accessed from
Haines. As you can imagine, opportunities for outdoor recreation are
endless. Expert local guides can take you rafting, canoeing, kayaking,
jet boating, or aboard scenic flights over Glacier Bay and the icecap.
Nature lovers will find abundant and varied bird populations, wildlife,
coastal rain forests and wildflower meadows. In Haines, we suggest you
visit the Sheldon Museum for its rich native heritage exhibits and also
the Alaska Indian Arts center in historic Fort Seward. During the winter
months, birdwatchers and photographers from the world over gather in
Haines to view the American bald eagles. In a short stretch along the
Chilkat River, hundreds of eagles spend the winter fishing in the
unfrozen waters. The birds are easily photographed and observed from the
road. Access to the port of Haines is by the Alaska Ferry, road from
Canada's Yukon Territory and which links to the Alaska Highway. Good
scheduled air service is provided by local carriers with flights from
Skagway and Juneau.

RAFTING
THE CHILKAT BALD EAGLE PRESERVE
Tour

The Chilkat Valley near Haines boasts the world's largest
concentration of Bald Eagles. Every autumn thousands of these
majestic birds migrate to the Chilkat, where they spend the
winter feeding on salmon. During the summer months a large
number of these eagles remain in the valley. As you float
silently along, scores of eagles can be seen and photographed perched in the trees and along the shoreline. Grizzly bears, black bears, and wolves also feed on the spawning salmon and are occasionally seen roaming the river banks. Many moose inhabit the lush forests of the region. The Chilkat Indians have lived in harmony with the valley for nearly two centuries at their riverside village of Klukwan. This is a float trip with no white water, and can be enjoyed by anyone over seven years of age. The trip includes a beautiful 30 mile drive up the Chilkat Valley to the preserve. Here you board a safe 18 foot inflatable raft for the trip through the preserve. Duration of the round trip is approximately four hours from Haines. Departs daily. At
the end of your float you will be treated with a delicious snack
of homemade cookies and hot drinks.
