HIGH
ARCTIC LODGES
Treeline
Lake Lodge - Central Barrenlands, NWT
Treeline Lodge is a
comfortable lodge, which offers ample opportunities to
engage in physical activities in the outdoors, in a
beautiful tundra setting with interpretation of the
natural environment and the history of the area.
In the fall, the
tundra exhibits an incredible tapestry of colour,
usually in mid August. “Fall” dates are selected for
this new program to maximize exposure to the migrating
caribou herds, which migrate through this area in late
August and September. These herds include mature bulls
in striking fall pelage with antlers shedding the
velvet. A herd of bull caribou passing in review, or
splashing in the edge of a lake against the red of the
tundra, is a magnificent sight. Photographic
opportunities abound.
Setting
and Accommodation: Treeline Lodge is located on the
shores of a 4-mile long tundra lake. The lodge offers
comfortable accommodation for 10 to 14 people in
individual bedrooms (2 twin beds per room) with shared
washroom and shower facilities, a guest lounge, and
kitchen/dining room area. This lodge is ideal for
private groups of 10 – 14 people, and custom
programming can be provided based on the desires of the
group. Rooms
are well-appointed, with coffee pots all linens, towels
and bath robes. Hair dryers, soaps, etc. are supplied in
the washrooms.
Meals:
The kitchen is warmly inviting, and the food is high
quality, fresh, varied, and plentiful. Breakfasts are
cooked “to order”, and ingredients for picnic
lunches are set out after breakfast, and each guest
creates his/her own sandwiches. Fruit, cheeses, and
homemade cookies round out the lunch offerings. Tea,
coffee, and juices are provided at all meals. Dinners
include creative entrees, from beef to lake trout, and
more, plus superb deserts with a local touch. Special
diets can be handled but advanced notice is required.
Activities:
The basic package includes access to equipment for
tundra and lake exploration, and some guided
experiences. Hiking is a favoured activity; easy walking
with views across the landscape, and opportunities to
look for wildlife or berry-picking.
Canoes are available for paddling and fishing
(basic canoe instruction can be provided if needed), and
mountain bikes are available for those who wish to
explore the 10 miles of roads and tracks. Early morning
or evening drives with lodge staff offer opportunities
to look for wildlife like caribou, tundra birds,
waterfowl, foxes, and the occasional wolf or grizzly
bear.
Evenings bring fellowship and discussions in the lounge,
plus opportunities to view northern videos or slide
shows, to learn about Dene and Inuit culture of the
barrenlands, as well as to hear stories of the explorers
and their Dene guides who passed nearby so long ago.
The
itinerary is worked out each morning
in consultation with guests, based on weather conditions,
but usually includes hiking or boating, mountain biking or
canoeing, or drives on the road system for wildlife
observation.
